Legislators were back in Tallahassee for the first committee week of the 2022 legislative session. The Republican-led Florida House of Representatives voted on and picked Rep. Paul Renner (R) to be its next Speaker, and Gov. Ron DeSantis tapped Dr. Joseph Lapado to be the state’s Surgeon General.
But with all the fun stuff said, it was the ongoing cage match between House Speaker Chris Sprowls and Rep. Anthony Sabatini, that was the real news of the day.
As you all know, Speaker Sprowls moved Rep. Sabatini’s office moved to the basement of the Capitol as a form of punishment for the anti-establishment barbs the popular conservative lawmaker has been making.
It has gotten ugly. Sabatini told The Floridian that Sprowls had “Sabatini derangement syndrome” and even took a swipe at Rep. Chris Latvala (R), calling him a “fat Mitt Romney.”

Gov. DeSantis has plucked Internist Dr. Joseph Lapado from California and appointed him to replace outgoing Surgeon General Scott Rivkees. As expected, Dr. Lapado is in lock-step with Gov. DeSantis’s COVID response.
Lapado addressed the media and held his own against some of the more ‘colorful’ Tallahassee reporters. Later in the day, as we were inhaling our Gumbo soup at Harry’s restaurant, Lapado happened to drop and reiterated his appreciation of the governor for picking him to be the Top Doc in the state.
And of course, we recommended the spicy gumbo soup and the blackened shrimp salad.
