Redistricting Process Stops

Well, I am not going to say ‘I told you so,’ but I told you so.

Gov. DeSantis has said that he was waiting to see what legal issues his and other Republican-friendly congressional redistricting maps could face before the process of drawing said maps came to a close.

Yesterday in Miami, I asked Gov. DeSantis how far or how close he and Speaker Chris Sprowls and Senate President Wilton Simpson were to come to terms with a congressional redistricting map.

As expected, Gov. DeSantis said he was waiting on a couple of legal issues to be resolved, explaining how he had veto power over any congressional map.

Our amigo, POLITICO’s Gary Fineout, posted about the letter DeSantis’s office sent the Florida Supreme Court asking to give him guidance to redraw fair and constitutional maps.

As Fineout stated, DeSantis brought the process to a screeching halt yesterday, as Republican legislators said they would not press forward until the clarifications DeSantis requested were obtained.

If DeSantis’s map holds up to scrutiny, then the Florida legislature will have no choice but to support it, and Republicans could make greater congressional gains on election day.

As for Rep. Al Lawson, whose minority gerrymandered district is all-but scrapped, he will still be able to run for reelection in a predominantly-minority district and win.

The focus will then be on two big races in Central Florida and in Tampa Bay.

Both Reps. Stephanie Murphy (D) and Charlie Crist (D) have called it quits, and now Republicans are in a position to win those Democrat-held seats. READ MORE HERE
