As the U.S. economy continues to limp through the 2026 midterm elections, Republican congressional nominee Casey Askar has said that if and when he wins his race in November and is sworn into office, he will seek to ease economic pain by filing legislation to cut the fuel consumption taxes for all Americans.
Askar's proposed "Cut the Fuel Tax" measure would be a first in American history.
How so?
The federal gas tax baseline rate is currently at 18.4 cents a gallon and has never been cut since its inception back in 1932. The last time the federal government raised the gas tax was back on October 1, 1993.
President Donald Trump just announced that he would like to suspend the consumption tax, but Askar wants to "slash" it altogether.
The pain at the pump is real as a result of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, so any temporary or permanent easing of taxes on fuel, especially on the Diesel fuel tax consumer goods transportation companies have to pay, are welcomed.
“Big government needs to be reigned in. We need to hold Congress and bureaucrats in Washington, D.C., accountable for their failed initiatives,” stated Askar in a press release. “We need to continue cutting overbearing regulations and federal taxes to help ease the pain at both the pump and the grocery store register.”
The proposal does not state exactly how much of the fuel taxes will be cut.
Askar, who recently won his primary election race (13-point victory) in one of the most sought-after, newly drawn Republican-leaning congressional districts in Florida, will face Progressive Democrat nominee Pia Dandiya in the November general election.
