In a short congressional reelection video filled with constituent testimonials, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) has managed to land a jab and a body blow to both Republicans and Democrats who have been urging her not to run in Florida’s 20th congressional district.
“Today, I am announcing my candidacy for reelection in congressional district 20, because we cannot let Trump destroy Broward County’s power,” state Rep. Wasserman Schultz said during her announcement video.
Rep. Wasserman, who used the likeness of former President Barack Obama in the background of the video, reminded Democratic voters that she ran the Democratic National Committee (DNC) by “answering President Obama’s call to lead.”
“Republicans couldn’t care less about lowering your healthcare, gas, or grocery bills. I will use all of my seniority and clout in Washington to continue to make our lives more affordable and make Broward a safer place to live, raise a family, and retire,” Wasserman Schultz added before appearing to take a swipe at some outspoken Black Democrats.
“ Some people do a lot of talking. I work hard to deliver results,” quipped the popular Democratic congresswoman.
While Democrats embraced her tenacity and grit to legislate and represent her constituents in the newly redrawn congressional district 22, and Republicans have targeted her for defeat since she first took office, Wasserman Schultz has delivered for her district and led the charge against the growing anti-Jewish and anti-Israel sentiment.
The Black Congressional Caucus and the Broward Black Democratic Caucus have recently turned on her, playing the Race Card against her because of the color of her skin.
“We want to have someone with our lived experience representing us in Congress,” State Senator Rosalind Osgood said on CBS News Miami. “We want little Black boys and little Black girls to see somebody that looks like them so that they can dream.”In looking at the demographic breakdown of CD 20, contrary to what some believe, and while there is a significant amount of Black voters living in the district, this is a predominantly white district.
Wasserman Schultz joins the crowded Democratic field of black congressional candidates, which includes Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, Dale Holness, Elijah Manley, Rudolph Mois, and Luther Campbell.
