Oliver Gilbert, a Miami-Dade County Commissioner, won the Democratic primary for Florida's 24th Congressional District seat Tuesday by just two percentage points.

If he wins in the November general election, which is likely considering the district is blue, he will replace retiring Democratic Representative Frederica Wilson, who endorsed Gilbert as her replacement.

Gilbert also previously served as the mayor of Miami Gardens.

He defeated Florida Senator Shevrin Jones for the Democratic nomination by just over two percentage points, according to preliminary results published by NBC News.

Gilbert received 34.4% of the vote compared to the 31.9% Sen. Jones garnered.

He will face off against real estate developer Te Brown, who was uncontested in the Republican primary.

Brown's campaign focuses primarily on affordable housing initiatives through her affordable housing plan. However, she is also campaigning on promises of greater school choice for parents, mass deportations, and an end to the H-1B program, according to her campaign website.

Gilbert's campaign focuses on a number of key issues including universal healthcare and childcare, immigration and the elimination of income taxes for lower-income people.

"What I’ve seen serving this community is simple. People want the same things. Good schools. Healthcare they can actually access. A commute that doesn’t take their life from them. A small business that can compete. A future their kids can build on," his campaign website informs about his reasons for running. "That’s what this campaign is about. Not running against anyone. Running toward something. Building a future that works for everyone, across South Florida."

One of his propositions is the BUILD Business Act, which would expand small businesses.

"The BUILD Business Act modernizes the Small Business Administration by expanding access to capital, reducing barriers to entrepreneurship, and helping more Americans start, grow, and expand successful businesses," his campaign website informs.
