The recent terrorist attack in Sydney, Australia, targeting the Jewish community and left 15 dead, is the latest and unfortunate event that stems from the rise of antisemitism around the world has prompted American lawmakers like Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) to point fingers at individuals and governments that appear to have turned their backs on Jews.
It was a terrorist attack, I mean it was a terrorist attack," said Rep. Wasserman Schultz. "In Australia, there has been, since October 7th, especially, a massive, violent rise in anti-Semitic attacks against the Jewish community."
Rep. Wasserman Schultz, who has been one of the most popular and outspoken critics against anti-Semitism in the House of Representatives, believes that the attack against Jews in Australia has reached an unsustainable level.
"There are Jews in Australia that have been talking about how they're not even sure they could stay in Australia, that they might have to find refuge somewhere," added Wasserman Schultz. "We can't even feel safe in our own countries, then you know all the more reason why we have to at least have a homeland, Jews need to be able to live safely openly as Jews anywhere in the world."
Never one to hold back her feelings or speak her mind, Rep. Wasserman Schultz squarely accused the Australian government failing the Jewish community.
"This attack was outrageous. It is really concerning that the government of Australia has really not been very supportive or responsive to the Jewish community throughout the time and that this anti-Semitism has exploded and that that's deeply concerning," she added.
"Hate has to be stamped out and condemned anywhere it rears its head."—Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
Wasserman Schultz doesn't believe the decline of anti-semitism is "headed towards the end right now," asserting that the only "way it ends" is when you have governments take a proactive approach to addressing head on the problem.
American lawmakers in Congress, both Republican and Democrat, are unified against antisemitism and in support of the state of Israel's right to exist.
Along with Wasserman Schultz, Reps. Byron Donalds and Jared Moskwitz, to name a couple, have also taken the lead in support of Israel and the abolition of anti-semititsm.
