Representative Randy Fine (R-FL) recently told The Floridian in an interview that dual citizens should not be allowed to serve in Congress, calling it a "problem."
"I think one of the problems that we have in America, frankly, a problem that we have in Congress, is we have people who serve two masters," Rep. Fine began. "We have foreigners who serve in the United States Congress who have sworn an oath of allegiance to another country, and then they claim to have sworn an oath of allegiance to the United States."
As a result, Rep. Fine introduced the Disqualifying Dual Loyalty Act in October, which requires House and Senate candidates to renounce any foreign citizenship before they can be elected to serve in Congress.
The Floridian asked if the bill was targeting Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN), a Somali-born congresswoman who has faced repeated calls for expulsion. The Florida congressman denied, even as she would possibly qualify.
"I do not have any knowledge that she is still a citizen of Somalia," Fine answered. "I mean, she certainly acts like she is. I think part of the problem with Congress today is that we do not know who all the dual citizens are."
He reiterated that if Rep. Omar still holds Somali citizenship, "She would either have to go back to her homeland of Somalia or she would have to give it up and say, 'I am fully American.' But so we know that there are many members of Congress that could be dual citizens. What we don't know is how many actually are, because people do not generally advertise that they are loyal to another nation."
Finepreviously called for Omar's denaturalization and deportation in December, saying, "The woman hates America. She's up to her eyeballs in both welfare fraud and immigration fraud. They should all go home."
