Florida House Speaker Danny "Daniel" Perez (R-Miami) recently sent out a memorandum designating the final interim committee week for the chamber as “Artificial Intelligence Week" to look over the growing effects of AI on the state.
"We all recognize that AI may open new economic vistas," Perez wrote. "At the same time, we see stories about how AI can be abused, have adverse effects on education, or harm emotionally vulnerable users."
According to one study, AI is the fastest-growing adopted technology in U.S. history.
"As policy makers, our understanding of the issue is complicated by the rapid emergence of this complex technology, and, as we’ve seen with social media, short-term legislative choices can have serious long-term consequences," Perez continued.
More specifically, Perez asked subcommittee chairs to "facilitate" talks on the positive and negative aspects of AI and its future in the Sunshine State. He also asked House members to come prepared with questions and opinions on the evolving topic.
"I would encourage all of you to come that week prepared to engage in this important topic, and I hope you emerge at the end of the week with a more fully rounded perspective on what AI means for the future of Florida," Perez concluded.
Artificial Intelligence Week is Dec. 8th-12th.
Last month, Miami Mayoral candidate Emilio Gonzalez unveiled his own plan for AI, cryptocurrency, blockchain, and other next-generation technology industries as he looks to win over the city in next month's election.
“Miami has long been the gateway to the Americas and a crossroads of international business. Our growth in blockchain, cryptocurrency, and artificial intelligence shows that the next wave of innovation belongs here,” Gonzalez said. “My administration will nurture this ecosystem so that Miami becomes the global capital of financial and emerging technologies, creating jobs and opportunities for our residents.”
