The South Florida Council of Firefighters, a union representing thousands of firefighters in South Florida, officially endorsed Representative Maria Elvira Salazar (R-27) in her Congressional District 27 race.
Rep. Salazar is running for reelection after serving the district, which covers the east coast of the Sunshine State from Miami to the northern tip of Biscayne National Forest.
The union said it was endorsing Rep. Salazar because of her assistance and advocacy for firefighters during her time in office thus far.
"Immediately following your elevation to Congress in 2021 came your steadfast support for firefighters, and in the years since, that support has never wavered," John O'Brien, the president of the SFCFF, wrote in his endorsement letter. "Whether in heading our concerns or championing our causes, your firefighters know that we can count on both you and your office to take the time to listen. You truly specialize in the lost art of treating others with dignity and respect."
Salazar has supported two major wins for South Florida firefighters in the past, including the reauthorization of the federal Assistance to Firefighters Program and the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant program.
"When South Florida needs them most, our firefighters show up. Today, I’m proud to know they have put their trust in me. Honored to earn the endorsement of the South Florida Council of Fire Fighters, representing more than 4,000 firefighters and their families across Miami-Dade and Monroe counties," Salazar wrote in an X post thanking the organization for the endorsement. "They run toward danger to protect our communities and save lives. In Congress, I will continue fighting for their health, benefits, retirement security, and the resources they need to keep South Florida safe. Our firefighters always have our backs. I will always have theirs."
