Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced a subpoena Friday for a baby-cam company accused of selling user data to the Chinese military.
The subpoena was issued earlier Friday to Lorex, a Canadian-founded company previously owned by a Chinese surveillance company until Dec. 2022.
"What consumers do not know is that [their] data might be shared with the Chinese military," Uthmeier said in a one-minute video posted to social media. "Imagine that, footage of your baby in a crib going to the Chinese government."
He added that possible foreign spying will "not be tolerated in Florida."
Lorex sells nanny cams, baby cams, and other in-home and in-business security technology.
In a news release, the attorney general's office said the subpoena seeks documents and information related to Lorex's ownership and corporate structure, including their relationship with China's Dahua Technology.
"This investigation is ongoing. The issuance of a subpoena is not a determination of wrongdoing by Lorex," the news release said.
