Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic party’s nominee for New York City Mayor, recently pledged to “fight back” against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers enforcing immigration laws in New York.
Mamdani brands himself as a Democratic Socialist and unexpectedly beat former New York governor Andrew Cuomo during the Democratic party’s primary elections.
Democratic Socialism endorses state control over most economic matters and scant private property rights while permitting limited public participation in the government’s decisions.
Mamdani has endorsed policies including rent freezes, public grocery stores, and taxpayer-funded childcare.
Economists have criticized Mamdani’s ideas as unsustainable and detrimental to New York’s economy.
Mamdani recently also promised to “fight back” against President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.
When asked about President Trump’s plans to deploy additional ICE agents to NYC, Mamdani stated that he would “stand up and fight back."
Mamdani criticized current NYC Mayor Eric Adams’ cooperation with ICE agents by instructing the city’s police (NYPD) to support ICE’s immigration operations.
“Those days are going to come to an end when I’m mayor,” stated Mamdani, implying he would resist cooperating with ICE agents in New York.
“The NYPD’s job is to create public safety in this city, not to assist ICE agent’s mission to attack the very fabric of this city,” continued Mamdani.
Trump and conservatives sternly rebuked Mamdani’s statements.
“He’s a Communist not a Socialist,” claimed Trump, who later went on to warn Mamdani he would be arrested if he frustrates ICE operations.
Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) remarked that Mamdani’s statements and his primary election victory reveal how “the Dems didn’t learn their lesson in November after all.”
Senator Scott’s statement alludes to arguments that Trump’s presidential victory was due to voters’ rejection of progressive social and economic policies.
