Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) weighed in on the Senate's ongoing discussion of the so-called "Big Beautiful Bill" passed by the House in late May during a recent appearance on Fox Business's Mornings with Maria, saying, "Republicans need to decide what we really want to do."
The discussion began with the Wall Street Journal noting that Senate Republicans are threatening to "pull the mega-bill apart" due to competing demands concerning Medicaid, green energy tax credits, and other areas of interest.
Thus, Rep. Donalds said, "Republicans need to decide what we really want to do," asking, "Do we want to have the President's tax policy, which the House did pass, which is the best tax policy we the nation has ever had while also taking care of the future financial outlook of the country?"
Additionally, he pointed out that competing interests are not limited to Senate Republicans, recalling how "I have got House members who sent a letter over to the Senate saying they want to weaken some of the provisions in the Green New Deal tax credits. They want them to go longer, not shorter, or eliminate them altogether. Here's the truth: We simply cannot afford them."
As a result, Rep. Donalds said that splitting the Big Beautiful Bill in two is unlikely, "but the reality is that if the Senate sends back a bill that cuts more money, that will be well received in the House by many members, probably except for about 14. It is about the future financial outlook of America. That is what we have got to put forward. That is what [Senator] Ron Johnson (R-WI) and [Senator] Rand Paul (R-KY) and many others are arguing for."
The Florida Congressman gave final comments addressing Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), telling him, "You have got to cut some spending, we just simply have to."
"We need to cut as much spending as we can. Budget reconciliation is an opportunity to do that," Donalds concluded.
