Though some of President Donald Trump's (R) choices for his administration have come under fire as of late, others have received bipartisan praise. One such pick who's received support is Florida Senator Marco Rubio (R), who's on track to become the next Secretary of State. When asked about the work that Senator Rubio will undertake as Secretary of State, both Democrats and Republicans agree that he brings "hope" to the role.
It's been a busy week on Capitol Hill. Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy met with GOP members to discuss the Department of Government Efficiency, and President Trump's Cabinet picks are meeting with senators to ensure they have the votes for confirmation.
Amidst the political bustle, the world still faces growing concerns, and among them is the threat of dictators in the Western Hemisphere along with the rise of crime and trafficking of guns and drugs.
In speaking exclusively with The Floridian, a couple of Florida lawmakers discussed the effect they believe Senator Rubio will have on the Western Hemisphere, sharing that his knowledge and background will lead to addressing concerns in places like Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Haiti.
Florida Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R) commented that "the time is now" in reference to addressing these global issues with Senator Rubio. "He's very clear on what he has to do, and especially with the Cuban regime on the brink itself, this could be the time," he expressed. "We have the right president, we have the right Secretary of State. We have the right people in place, and the people of Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and the region deserve freedom."
Florida Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D), Co-Chairwoman of the Haiti Caucus, also weighed in on what Senator Rubio could offer for Haiti.
"I think he has a little bit more understanding because he is from the South Florida region, and he's been dealing with this and understands the impact," she noted. "I'm hoping the willingness is there from the new Administration to actually deal with the gangs and cartels that are having guns and drugs going through Haiti, so I think there might be some hope having Rubio there and having Mike Waltz as a National Security advisor."
Rubio is expected to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate shortly after President-elect Donald Trump takes office.
