The US Treasury Department has announced new sanctions against several charitable aid organizations that are surreptitiously channeling donations received to Palestinian terror organizations.
The sanctions impact five nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) spread throughout the Middle East and Europe who reportedly directly cooperate with US-designated terror groups Hamas and Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).
Entities sanctioned include Turkish, Dutch, Palestinian, and Italian NGOs alongside their leadership.
The NGOs were either controlled by Hamas and PFLP or provided substantial support for either of them.
“Treasury will continue to use all available tools to prevent Hamas, the PFLP, and other terrorist actors from exploiting the humanitarian situation in Gaza to fund their violent activities at the expense of their own people,” said Treasury Deputy Secretary Michael Faulkender.
The sanctions follow increased Israeli efforts to eliminate Hamas’ hijacking of aid efforts to support its war against Israel.
For months, Israel has prohibited the entry of foreign aid to Gaza and instead has directly distributed aid through its military.
According to Israel’s government, 531,592 tons of aid have been allowed into Gaza since January 2025.
Despite such aid efforts, Israel’s efforts to prevent Hamas and other terror groups from hijacking aid have been criticized as excessive by progressive Western states and the United Nations.
Indeed, the US’s sanctions counterbalance recent sanctions imposed on certain Israeli officials by the United Kingdom (UK) and other Western nations.
State Secretary Marco Rubio condemned the sanctions, arguing that they risk forgetting that Hamas, not Israel, is the enemy.
“We remind our partners,” said Secretary Rubio, “not to forget who the real enemy is.”
“We reject any notion of equivalence: Hamas is a terrorist organization that committed unspeakable atrocities, continues to hold innocent civilians hostage, and prevents the people of Gaza from living in peace,” continued Rubio.
