U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (D-FL) mocked the Trump Administration over rising electricity prices in Florida.
She stated, “Propaganda I am NOT falling for:”
“The Trump Administration saying Floridians have affordable electric bills??” Rep. Castor added.
The video embedded in the post shows the Hon. Wright discussing how Florida, over 15 years, has had very little rise in their electricity price.”
It then cuts to Castor as she argues Florida has seen record increases in electricity costs.
“Electricity prices are surging. Just over the past couple months, they've (Florida) asked for the largest rate hike request in U.S. history up in the panhandle, and we continue to grapple with higher rates,” she said.
The Florida Public Service Commission approved the rate hikes after Florida Power & Light submitted a proposal citing residential growth and the need to diversify energy generation methods.
"FPL has added about 275,000 customers since 2021 and expects to add about 335,000 more through the end of 2029," the proposal states.
In a statement given to WPTV, an FPL spokesperson said, “the increase would add up to about $9 billion over the next four years.
”Despite the drastic price increases, the spokesperson also claimed that even with the rate adjustment, residential bills will still be lower than the national average. They say that, adjusting for inflation, a typical 1,000-kWh residential bill in January 2026 would still be 20% lower than it was in 2006.
Zayne Smith, senior director of advocacy for AARP Florida, said many people will face tough decisions if there’s a hike.
“Whether or not they run their AC or go get a prescription filled or go to the grocery store in the hopes that they can bring home a basket of groceries for a decent price,” Smith said.
