President Donald Trump announced the departure of his administration’s director of legislative affairs, James Braid, revealing that the Congressional liaison will leave his post in September 2026.

“James has played a critical role in our many accomplishments with Congress, including THE ONE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL, beating the Democrats in two shutdown showdowns, passing the GENIUS Act, defeating a record number of War Powers resolutions, and the confirmation of my Cabinet at the fastest rate in decades,” President Trump wrote on social media, praising the aide’s work during his second term.

“This has been, and will continue to be, the most successful Republican Congress in History,” President Trump affirmed.

Braid's Resume

Braid is credited with being “responsible for shepherding” President Trump’s agenda in Congress, especially for playing a pivotal role in lobbying for the President’s more controversial efforts.

Prior to serving as President Trump’s top Congressional liaison, Braid served as a top policy aide for Vice President JD Vance during his time as U.S. Senator.

Braid has also served as chief of staff to former Reps. Marr Rosendale (R-Mont.) and Ken Buck (R-Co.), and deputy chief of staff to Rep. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) and U.S. Sen. Ted Budd (R-N.C.) during his time in the House.

The Top Legislative aide has also served as policy director to the House Freedom Caucus, making his departure from the White House a devastating hit to the Trump administration.

JD Vance Praises Braid's Work

“James Braid had one of the toughest jobs in the entire Administration… and delivered for President Trump at every turn,” VP Vance wrote on X. “Not only is James brilliant, he is one of the hardest workers you will ever meet,” Vance added, affirming that he “couldn’t be prouder of him.”

Braid’s departure comes during a rigorous time for the Trump administration as President Trump’s approval ratings reach near-record lows, contentious midterm elections persist, and other senior personnel have either left or are in the midst of departing.
