In August of 2021, the botched Afghanistan withdrawal left 13 United States servicemembers dead at Abbey Gate and billions of dollars in equipment stranded for terrorist groups to use. Republican legislators from Florida and Texas shared their disdain with President Joe Biden (D) and Vice President Kamala Harris (D), not only for how they handled the situation three years ago but also for the lack of acknowledgment of the servicemembers’ sacrifice.

Representative Brian Mast (R-FL), a U.S. Army Veteran and Bronze Star recipient joined former President Donald Trump (R) at Arlington National Cemetery to lay wreaths honoring the fallen soldiers, blasting the Biden-Harris administration in the process.

“I joined President Trump to lay wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery in remembrance of the 13 heroes we lost at Abbey Gate,” said Rep. Mast. “We lost these heroes because of the ignorance and arrogance of politicians, like Kamala Harris & Joe Biden, who treat America's warriors as disposable.”

Moreover, Representative Vern Buchanan (R-FL) sent out a post on social media pressing the Biden-Harris administration for not addressing the families of the lost servicemembers.

Three years since we lost 13 of our brave service members amid the disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal, the Biden-Harris White House has yet to honor those we lost. Kudos to Speaker Johnson for his decision to award the Congressional Gold Medal to these Gold Star families,” said Rep. Buchanan. He continued, “I am also hopeful that my proposal, which passed the House earlier this year and requires the Pentagon to develop a plan to construct a memorial at Arlington National Cemetery to commemorate these 13 men and women will be signed into law as part of the final NDAA later this year.”

Furthermore, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) stated that the Biden-Harris White House “grossly failed” and is responsible for the American servicemembers’ deaths.

“Today is the solemn anniversary of the Abbey Gate terrorist attack in Kabul, Afghanistan. 13 US servicemembers died that day. Their deaths were entirely preventable. For nearly a month, the world watched the collapse of Afghanistan. Mistake after mistake led to this disaster,” said Sen. Cruz. “The Biden-Harris White House grossly failed to lead in the Afghanistan withdrawal, and their failures culminated in the deaths of these American heroes. 3 years later, we are still fighting for accountability for the catastrophic Biden-Harris Afghanistan withdrawal.”

Also, Representative Wesley Hunt (R-TX), a West Point graduate and Army Veteran acknowledged President Trump for showing up at Arlington National Cemetery.

“On the 3rd Anniversary of Abbey Gate, America’s President Donald Trump lays a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery. The first rule of leadership is showing up,” said Rep. Hunt.

Republicans have pressed firmly on this issue since the tragic events that unfolded.
