Republican 'Culture War' Continues?
Once again, Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried used her official position to campaign on and condemn a controversial piece of legislation in the Florida Legislature— Rep. Joe Harding’s “Parental Rights in Education” bill. Commissioner Fried is calling the bill "outrageous and unconscionable” and an "all-out culture war" by Republicans.
Democrats and media have dubbed the bill the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.
“This looks to be another dark day here in the Florida Capitol as Governor DeSantis and Florida Republicans launched an all-out culture war to play to their base in an election year, rather than focusing on the real issues and patting the people of our state, including affordable housing, clean water, and food security for children,” said Commissioner Fried.
Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith (D), an openly gay legislator from Orlando, had an amendment he introduced calling for the wording in the original bill to be changed.
