Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., and Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., announced a congressional investigation into the Palisades wildfires that destroyed thousands of homes and killed at least 31 people. The inquiry will focus on water resources available during the fires.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom previously signed a $2.5 billion relief bill. Following the bill’s passage, the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging released a statement, announcing that “Chairman Scott and Chairman Johnson believe the Palisades Fire was more than just a horrific tragedy; it was an unacceptable failure of government to protect the lives and property of its citizens.”

The fires broke out in January 2025, destroying homes, historic landmarks, and community buildings, including schools and libraries.

“Why wasn’t there water in the reservoirs? And why haven’t people come out to help them rebuild? Why was insurance canceled right before people’s homes burned down?” Scott questioned in an interview with The Floridian.

Many residents say response times were slow and that fire hydrants and reservoirs were dry. Billions of dollars have already been allocated to wildfire prevention, and the congressional investigation will examine why those measures failed.

“We’ve given California unbelievable amounts of money for wildfire suppression. I want to look at how that money’s been spent. So, I’ve been asking for information about that,” Scott further commented.

In August, television personality Spencer Pratt, best known for The Hills, met with Scott after posting on social media about the need for further investigation. Pratt and his wife, Heidi, lost their home in the fires.

In September 2025, Scott introduced the Federal Tax Relief bill to provide tax breaks for victims of federally recognized disasters, including the Palisades wildfires.
