Republican congressional candidate Dan Green, who is running to replace Democratic Rep. Darren Soto in Florida’s 9th District, is running as a Trump Republican. Still, during the 2024 Presidential primary election, he backed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over President Trump.
During an interview conducted in the lead-up to the presidential election, Green explained why he was supporting Gov. DeSantis, saying he was doing so because both he and DeSantis were war veterans.
Interviewer: And when you make these phone calls, what’s the pitch?
Green: The country is going in the wrong direction. We need a new leader, someone with a great record, a great record as governor. 100% of his promises have been adopted and followed…we need new energy.
His website points to his 2019 appointment to the Department of Defense by President Trump:
"In 2019, Dan was appointed by President Trump as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy & Force Development at the U.S. Department of Defense. While in the Department of Defense, Dan played a pivotal role in our ongoing defense strategy and scenario planning."
Green is running in a very competitive Republican primary election race against 3 other candidates. The latest public opinion poll has Green in 4th place with 11.6% support.
The race in the heavily Hispanic-leaning district is a virtual tie.
The frontrunners are Jorge Martinez, Thomas Chalifoux, and Ben Butler
Florida’s primary election is August 18.
