Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier warned the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) that he's not putting up with the league's antics on his home court following an incident between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever over the weekend.
"The WNBA knows better than to play games down here in Florida, because I’ll be charging people with assault," Uthmeier wrote.
Attorney General Uthmeier's response came after Chicago Sky guard/forward DiJonai Carrington smacked Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham across the face after attempting to block Cunningham's breakaway layup attempt in the first quarter between both teams on Saturday afternoon.
Carrington received a Flagrant 2 foul on Cunningham and was ejected from the game. After being thrown out, Carrington went to 'X' and wrote "white privilege" while tagging the Fever's account. Carrington is black, while Cunningham is white.
Attorney General Uthmeier later specified his comment.
"I should probably clarify … assault and battery," Uthmeier wrote.
The incident comes after Cunningham's recent defense of keeping biological men out of women's sports and locker rooms in an ESPN interview in July. Cunningham specified her reasoning was to protect the rights and fairness of biological women from competing or sharing locker rooms with transgender athletes, a topic that has also become a political lightning rod among the right and left in recent years.
Cunningham later clarified she had no hate for the transgender community while standing by her stance.
"I said what I said. I think it's kind of common sense, and I think I'll always believe in that," Cunningham said. "I think it's really important to protect children, and that's little girls who are also involved in that category. And so, I stand on what I said, and I always believe that.
"I'm not a very political person, but I do have beliefs, I have morals, and I'll always stand on those and be true to who I am," Cunnigham continued. "I think people are going to take it how they want to take it. But I've never even really said anything about that. And so, when it comes just to protecting young girls in sport and women in sport, I feel very strongly about that."
The Fever and Sky will play each other again on Aug. 23, with Carrington already looking forward to the matchup.
