Florida state and local law enforcement agencies have joined Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, and Tennessee to conduct “Operation Southern Slow Down,” a weeklong traffic initiative aimed at cracking down on speeding and aggressive driving on major interstates and highways within the southern states.

The initiative is meant to raise awareness of the dangers and consequences of unsafe driving behaviors.

Miami Beach PD Urges Drivers To "Slow Down"

In a statement on X, the Miami Beach Police Department confirmed its participation, urging drivers to “Slow down. Obey the speed limit. Make safety your priority.”

“Your destination isn’t going anywhere. Slow down,” the Police Department warned, affirming, “Together, we can prevent tragedies before they happen.”

More than 50,000 Citations in 2025

In 2025, the week-long campaign resulted in over 50,000 speeding citations and warnings. It also helped catch several Driving Under the Influence (DUI) patrons and distracted drivers.

Florida's "Super Speeder Law"

The state of Florida’s participation in “Operation Southern Slow Down” is just one of the many efforts by state and local law enforcement to tackle reckless driving.

In 2025, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Florida’s Dangerous Excessive Speeding Bill, or “Super Speeder Law.”

Under the bill, drivers going 50 miles or more over the speed limit or driving at 100 miles per hour or more can be arrested instead of solely being given a traffic citation.

Despite the weeklong effort to raise awareness of such dangers, State and local law enforcement's crackdown on reckless driving remains constant throughout the year.

Tips For Safe Driving

Should you drive amid the campaign, officials recommend leaving early, obeying traffic signs, maintaining a safe distance, and remaining alert to your surroundings.

The ninth-annual traffic enforcement effort will run from July 13, 2026, to July 19, 2026.
