There are currently 13 candidates vying to replace Mayor Francis Suarez, who has led the city since 2017. They include Emilio Gonzalez, Eileen Higgins, Joe Carollo, Alex Díaz de la Portilla, Ken Russell, and Xavier Suárez, who all competed in a debate earlier this month.
The election is non-partisan, but most of the candidates have Democratic or Republican leanings.
Gonzalez, a former U.S. Army veteran, has been highly active on social media with a series of policy proposals in his bid. Gov. Ron DeSantis, Florida Republican Sen. Rick Scott (R), and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R) are all backing his candidacy.
One of his competitors, Eileen Higgins, is a Miami-Dade County commissioner. According to candidate data, Higgins has nearly $156,000 in monetary contributions, only second behind Gonzalez's $159,000.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has endorsed Higgins for the position of mayor. If elected, Higgins would become the first woman elected mayor in Miami's 128-year history.
Carollo, a City of Miami commissioner, is a name familiar in city circles for his brash nature and ability to stir the pot, or cafecito if we're being true to the local flavor. However, the tough-minded Carollo doesn't come without experience, having served as Miami's mayor from 1996 to 1997 and again from 1998 to 2001.
Election day in the race for mayor is Nov. 4.
