Representative Daniel Webster (R-FL) is introducing legislation to strengthen the United States' position as the world leader in innovative and technological standards.

Appropriately named the Utilize Standards for All (USA) Act, Rep. Webster's bill directs the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to encourage the development of voluntary, consensus-based standards, with the private sector as the influential actor, while also strengthening the public-private cooperation model between the government and contractors.

Such a bill is designed to build on President Donald Trump's recent trade deals with foreign countries and ensure that America's place as the world leader in innovation remains firm.

"Standards are the blueprint for how the world builds, trades, and connects," Rep. Webster said in his press release, adding, "When the United States writes that blueprint, it reflects our values of private sector innovation, safeguards our technology, and keeps our workers and industries competitive. The USA Act ensures that the United States, not Beijing, remains the global leader by advancing private sector-led consensus-based standards that allow American innovation to thrive and put our country first."

The Florida Congressman's bill comes on the heels of tech giant Apple's recent announcement that it would invest $100 billion in domestic manufacturing after President Trump threatened to place a 25% tariff on the company if it did not do so.

After all, Apple stood to pay over $1 billion in tariff-related costs otherwise.

Webster's bill also follows legislation introduced by his colleague, Representative Jimmy Patronis (R-FL), which mandates that artificial intelligence (AI) used for official government business cannot have built-in political biases.

"The President and his team have delivered a smart executive order that instructs federal agencies to only leverage AI tools that speak the truth," said Rep. Patronis, adding, "Surprising to no one, there are examples after examples of AI tools going off the rails because the foundational programming tilts politically Left."
