The University of Florida is the fifth-best public university in the nation, according to Forbes' 2026 list of the best colleges and universities. The Gators were also named the 30th-best university overall in the United States and earned the top spot among Florida schools.
“This is proof that the University of Florida is going forward at full speed. Our energy and our drive are stronger than ever, and we are not about to slow down,” UF Board of Trustees Chair Mori Hosseini said. “UF is a gem – a powerhouse of research and economic development, and an outstanding investment for the state of Florida. While other schools are stepping back, UF is leaning in and leading the way.”
Located in Gainesville, the University of Florida (UF) earned the ranking due to their "successful, high-earning and influential graduates from all economic backgrounds, with less student debt," Forbes noted.
For its rankings, Forbes analyzed 500 institutions on its “America’s Top Colleges” list, which includes reviews of alumni salaries, academic success, and returns on student investment.
Specifically, UF boasts an average alumni salary of $127,500, 1,300-1,480 average SAT scores, and 28-33 median ACT scores, while costing $44,879. The school also has an average grant aid of $10,724.
“The Forbes recognition, combined with our record-breaking year for research funding and increase in applications, shows just how much UF is thriving and setting the standard for institutions throughout Florida and the world,” UF Interim President Kent Fuchs said.
Florida Congressman Byron Donalds congratulated UF in a post on the honor.
"Congratulations @UF on being named the #5 public university in America & among the top schools for return on investment," Donalds said. "UF also offers the lowest tuition in America while having excellent student outcomes, including high job placement rates & competitive salaries for new grads."
The University of California-Berkeley earned the top spot among universities in the rankings. It was followed by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and the University of Michigan.
