Miami mayoral candidate Emilio T. Gonzalez has announced his plan to clean up City Hall, which he includes as restoring trust and holding corrupt insiders accountable, in his bid to become the next mayor of Miami. The plan follows a bitter fight with the City of Miami to restore the mayoral election to November, a fight Gonzalez has won for the time being.
"As your mayor, I’ll dismantle weaponized government, install permanent oversight, close the revolving door, and shut down backroom deals," Gonzalez said. "My administration will act fast to hold corrupt officials accountable—and restore dignity, honor, and trust in Miami’s government."
Specifically, Gonzalez stated he would prevent city departments from using intimidation, investigation, or retaliation against residents, whistleblowers, or small business owners. He added that any abuse of power under his administration would result in consequences, including termination or removal from office.
Gonzalez also stated that he would maintain a cooperative relationship with the Florida State Attorney's Office, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), the Florida Agency for Fiscal Oversight (FAFO), the City of Miami Inspector General's Office, and federal law enforcement for better oversight.
In addition, Gonzalez promised to hold Miami officials accountable who knowingly violate the City's Charter or Constitution, particularly involving litigation. Gonzalez said Miami taxpayers should "not be left footing the bill for political recklessness."
Gonzalez also promised to enforce the Citizens' Bill of Rights, which orders that any employee or official who willfully violates its provisions will be terminated or required to resign. Moreover, he noted the Citizens' Bill of Rights would be displayed in City of Miami offices to portray his administration's commitment to public service.
Moreover, Gonzalez vowed to ban elected officials from profiting off their positions through no-bid contracts or backdoor consulting roles after leaving office. He also said officials would be subject to annual audits or financial disclosures.
Gonzalez said more campaign pillars would follow in the coming weeks.
"This campaign is about turning a page on a culture of corruption and deception," Gonzalez added. "Miami needs leadership that doesn't dodge responsibility or hide behind legal teams. It needs someone who's fought for the people and is ready to fight alongside them to restore trust in our government."
