U.S. Rep. Carlos Gimenez, (R), commented on the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Temporary Protected Status and CHNV Protection Status for those who applied, accusing the Biden administration of failing to secure the U.S. border.
“The Biden administration’s failed open-border policy allowed thousands of criminals and gang members to enter our country, leaving us to clean up the mess," stated Rep. Gimenez on social media.
Despite the heavy criticisms, in the same post, Gimenez acknowledges that many individuals who are under the protection programs are “hardworking members of our communities who deserve our support and protection.”
However, Gimenez closes out his statement, stating, “The Supreme Court’s decision is the law of the land, and we must respect it.”
The Court’s ruling aligns with the Trump administration’s plans to tighten up border security. The Supreme Court granted President Trump’s request to revoke humanitarian parole from over 500,000 immigrants, many of whom are from Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, etc.
“Rescinding TPS for Venezuelans is warranted to untangle the confusion, and provide an opportunity for informed determinations regarding the TPS designations and clear guidance.”
The Trump administration’s exact reasoning for the revoking of TPS status from asylum seekers was due to “numerous deficiencies and lack of clarity.”
The ruling has drawn sharp criticism from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers.
Rep. Frederica Wilson, (D), disagreed with the decision.
“This decision is cruel and inhumane. These are folks who were escaping brutal dictatorships, gang violence, and turmoil," stated Rep. Wilson. “Deporting them is a death sentence.”
Rep. María Elvira Salazar, (R), also criticized the decision on social media.
“I am deeply disappointed by the Supreme Court's decision to abruptly end TPS for more than 350,000 Venezuelans.” wrote Rep. Salazar.
Salazar asked the Trump administration to grant Deferred Enforced Departure to Venezuelans and beneficiaries of the CHNV program.
“We must protect those fleeing tyrannies, not return them to them.”
