As we grow older, many of us feel our independence slipping away. However, the Florida Silver Haired Legislature exists to ensure seniors don’t lose control over the issues that matter most. As President and CEO of this organization, I have worked with fellow seniors who dedicate their time to advocating for policies that protect our well-being. Each year, we travel to Tallahassee to meet with legislators, ensuring that Florida’s seniors have a voice in decisions that impact our lives. And year after year, one issue remains at the top of our agenda: protecting Medicare Advantage.
For millions of Florida seniors, Medicare Advantage isn’t just another healthcare option—it’s an essential program. With inflation driving up everyday prices, seniors need a plan that provides high-quality care while keeping costs predictable. We look to President Trump to deliver on his campaign promise to support seniors by working with Congress to protect and strengthen Medicare Advantage.
Unlike traditional fee-for-service Medicare, Medicare Advantage offers comprehensive coverage with out-of-pocket cost caps—a critical feature for seniors on fixed incomes. The program also provides benefits not covered by traditional Medicare, such as vision, dental, and hearing, along with wellness programs that help us stay active and independent. Many plans now include telehealth services and in-home care support, which are especially valuable for seniors in rural communities or those with mobility challenges.
After two years of funding cuts, seniors and advocates are urging the Trump administration and Congressional leaders—including newly appointed U.S. Senator Ashley Moody and Congressman Byron Donalds, who recently announced his run for governor—to protect and strengthen a program millions rely on for affordable, comprehensive care.
Other lawmakers like Reps. Kat Cammack and Anna Paulina Luna have also expressed support for the measure.
“Medicare Advantage isn’t just another health care option—it’s a lifeline,” said Ernie Bach, Executive Director of the Florida Silver Haired Legislature. “Seniors need a plan that offers stability, affordability, and services traditional Medicare doesn’t cover.”
After two years of funding cuts to the program, further reductions could result in higher premiums, reduced benefits, and fewer plan choices—directly affecting the health and financial stability of millions of retirees. With more than 50% of America’s Medicare beneficiaries choosing Medicare Advantage over traditional Medicare, protecting this program should be a priority for lawmakers.
That’s why the Florida Silver Haired Legislature will continue to advocate for seniors at every level of government. We will attend hearings, speak with policymakers, and push for policies that safeguard the health and financial security of older Americans—not just in Florida, but across the country. But we can’t do it alone. We urge President Trump, Senator Ashley Moody, and Florida’s congressional delegation to recognize the critical role Medicare Advantage plays in seniors’ lives and take decisive action to keep it strong.
Florida is home to more than 2.8 million Medicare Advantage seniors—one of the largest populations in the country. Many of us have spent our lives working hard and contributing to our communities. Now, we need our elected officials to uphold their commitment to ensuring that Medicare Advantage remains a stable and affordable option for today’s seniors and for generations to come.
