Broward Sheriff Helicopter Crashes, Killing Officer and Civilian

UPDATE 1:46pm: Broward Sheriff Greg Tony has confirmed Captain Terryson Jackson of the Broward Sheriff’s office died in a helicopter crash this morning.

“With a heavy heart, we announce the untimely loss of a longtime employee, Captain Terryson Jackson, who passed away this morning, August 28, 2023, after a BSO Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services helicopter crashed in Pompano Beach,” posted Tony.

A civilian who’s name has not yet been released is also reported dead.

UPDATE 12:43pm: One person is confirmed dead and four have been taken to the hospital after a Broward Sheriff's helicopter crashed in Pompano Beach, according to Pompano Fire and Rescue spokesperson Sandra King. King said the two people taken to the hospital were the ones in the helicopter and also two civilians.

Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony has confirmed a Fire Rescue Helicopter from the Broward Sheriff's office crashed this morning near North Dixie Highway and Atlantic Boulevard in Pompano Beach.

"At approximately 8:46am, emergency personnel responded to a call of an aircraft alert located southwest of the Pompano Beach Airpark. The helicopter involved in the crash is a BSO fire rescue helicopter," according to a statement from Tony's office. "Pompano Beach Fire Rescue transported two people to an area hospital."

Videos began circulating this morning showing a helicopter with smoke billowing out of it spinning around and falling to the ground.

"Broward County Sheriffs office helicopter has crashed in Pompano Beach FL," posted the X account @crimewithbobby. "3 people were reportedly onboard and 2 people have been transported to Broward Health, their condition is unknown."

Broward Sheriff's office confirmed two people were taken to the hospital but did not confirm the presence of a third individual as of the publishing of this article.

Another angle of the crash was posted by the account @breakingryan1.

Broward Sheriffs are asking motorists to avoid the area of North Dixie Highway and Atlantic Boulevard in Pompano Beach. Dixie Highway is shut down between Northeast Fifth Street and Northeast 10th Street.
