Florida Senator Rick Scott (R) is mounting a 2024 Senate reelection campaign, removing any possibility of a 2024 presidential run. As Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) fuels rumors of a presidential run, Senator Scott is highlighting policy differences.
One divisive issue in the state is abortions. Florida Republicans have supported a bill that would enact a ban on abortions after 6 weeks, which Governor DeSantis has signaled he would sign. However, over the weekend, Scott took part in an interview with Telemundo's Julio Vaquerio, Sen. Scott argued that he supports Florida's current ban on abortion after 15 weeks. The current ban includes exceptions for rape, intent, and the life of the mother.
Scott explained, "first off, that's a tough issue for people. I mean, you really have to be really compassionate about what people are going through, I think where most people are is reasonable restrictions. And probably most people are about 15 weeks with all the exceptions."
The bill that was introduced to ban abortions after 6 weeks would also prevent educational institutions and government entities from using public money to assist people in traveling outside of Florida to receive an abortion.
Moreover, the question regarding who he would support in the 2024 election, but Scott did not immediately respond.
"I always tell everybody when you're going to vote for somebody, would you hire them to manage your life? Because that's what we're doing, OK. And so I think what you have to do is you have to look at all the candidates, whether it's Trump or DeSantis or Nikki Haley or any of them say, what is their Background?" Scott questioned.
"How did they do the jobs they have now? What's my concerns about the future? And so for the issues of the country today, who would be the best? And there's going to be other people that are getting into the race," he added.
