Miami—Agriculture Commissioner and gubernatorial candidate Nikki Fried held a rally in protest of the recently leaked opinion by Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, where he called the Roe v. Wade decision “egregiously wrong” and “must be overruled.”

Commissioner Fried says that she would not be surprised if the Supreme Court were to strike down the controversial abortion decision, that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis would call for a special legislative session and ask the Republican-led state legislature to introduce legislation to ban abortions.

“No one ever thought we'd even have the abortion ban from this legislative session. And they've been toying with it for decades at this point. I would not put it past this governor. I'm going to bring our legislators back into a special session to pass a more restrictive ban after this one is called this a Supreme Court decision,” said Fried.

Fried added that Republicans would not stop with banning abortions and would go as far as to ban “access to contraceptives and birth control.”

In addition, Fried, who was flanked by U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, State Rep. Michael Grieco, and other activists, said that “1 out of 4 women have had an abortion,” and that those women were not just Democrats, but Independent and Republican voters.

Fried believes the leaked opinion will not just energize her political party’s base of support, “but women across the country,” and argued that the state of Florida was “not lost” to Democrats.

“Florida is not lost…The state did not change that much to make it a Red State,” said Fried.

Fried also attended a Broward County rally later in the afternoon.
