Democratic challenger for Florida’s U.S. Senate seat, Angie Nixon, and CBS News are facing heavy scrutiny after the outlet published an interview clip of Nixon’s views on Cuba.
In the original post, CBS News published a video clip of Nixon, captioned: “Asked whether Cuba is a dictatorship, Florida Democratic Senate candidate Angie Nixon, who is challenging Sen. Ashley Moody, declined to say.”
In the video clip, Nixon did not explicitly label the Cuban regime a dictatorship but instead used accounts from others to deem it one.
“That is what people have told me. I have never been to Cuba, and so I will have to take their word for it," Nixon said.
Both Nixon and CBS News faced criticism after the post – Nixon for her response and the outlet for their caption on Nixon’s comments.
Nixon Calls Out CBS
Nixon condemned the outlet, writing on X: "To claim I declined to answer the question is categorically false. That is not journalism. It is misinformation."
It’s disappointing to have to say this, but @CBSNews, this is a serious failure of editorial reporting. I clearly state in this clip that while I have not personally been to Cuba, I have spoken with Cubans who have described it as a dictatorship, and I believe them. To claim I declined to answer the question is categorically false. That is not journalism. It is misinformation.

CBS Reuploads Post With Updated Caption
The outlet deleted the original post and reuploaded it with a new caption and an editor's note.
"Editor's note: A previous version of this post did not accurately portray Rep. Nixon‘s answer. It has been deleted," the outlet shared.
Florida Democratic Senate candidate Angie Nixon, who is challenging Republican Sen. Ashley Moody, was asked whether Cuba is a dictatorship. Here's what she had to say.
“That is what people have told me. I have never been to Cuba, and so I will have to take their word for it," Nixon told CBS News’ @cbenavidesTV. Nixon also criticized the decades-long U.S. embargo on Cuba and said she supports returning to Obama-era policies.

Figures Criticize Both Parties
Florida gubernatorial candidate Congressman Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) responded to Nixon's response criticizing her and the Democratic Party.
This is the craziest thing I’ve ever heard.
Of COURSE the Castro regime is a dictatorship.
It’s sad to see what has become of the Democrat Party. They are fully consumed by socialism. https://t.co/wJVaSqT4ko

Florida State Sen. Shevrin Jones (D-Fl-34) also chimed in, condemning the outlet instead for its misrepresentation of Nixon's response.
Shame on you, @CBSNews! You misrepresented @AngieNixon’s answer, then offered an editor’s note instead of an apology. You demand accountability from everyone you cover. Hold yourselves to the same standard. Angie deserves an apology. Your audience deserves accurate journalism.
