Medal of Honor Awarded to Florida Soldier

It was a big day for the family of former U.S. Army Sgt. Alwyn Cashe, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor at the White House on Thursday.

“I never had the privilege to meet this incredible man in person, but his life and legacy inspire me. Rest In Peace Alwyn,” stated Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D)

Reps. Michael Waltz (R), Dan Crenshaw (R), and Stephanie Murphy (D) are credited for coming together to push for the nation’s highest honor to be bestowed on to Sgt. Cashe, who was from Oviedo, Florida.

Rep. Murphy represents Oviedo.

It took a little over a year for the U.S. Military and the Biden Administration to finally award Cashe with the Medal of Honor

While on duty, Cashe saved the lives of multiple soldiers after their Bradley fighting vehicle struck an improvised explosive device and caught on fire. Repeatedly returning to the vehicle to pull out the wounded soldiers, he was left open to enemy gunfire and was also set on fire. He would later pass away from his wounds.

In response, noting “that the final award authority for the Medal of Honor rests solely with the President,” the bipartisan coalition argued that the Department of Defense should “swiftly provide your endorsement to the President.”
