President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order requiring the Pentagon and Veterans Affairs to modernize their digital infrastructure to fast-track veterans’ access to benefits.
President Trump’s order aims to expand access and create opportunities, remove antiquated system barriers, and deliver life-changing support and benefits.
The Order's Added Requirements
“The Order directs the Secretary of War and the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to update information technology systems to ensure the sharing of all Official Military Personnel Files and Service Treatment Records from the moment an individual enters military service through the duration the individual receives Veterans Affairs benefits,” the directive states.
President Trump’s directive aims to reform the “outdated” record transfer systems that take an average of 90 to 180 days to complete.
According to the directive, these systems complicate “service members’ transition from active-duty service to civilian life, and delaying their healthcare coverage, benefits processing, educational opportunities, and job training and placement.”
Both agencies must establish and use new digital tools through “secure artificial intelligence and other emerging capabilities consistent with applicable privacy protections” to compile veterans’ applications for and access to their benefits in “a single comprehensive source.”
President Trump also mandates the Secretary of War, the Secretary of Labor, and the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to overhaul the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) to enhance career guidance during the military-to-civilian transition.
The Transition Assistance Program
According to its website, TAP “provides information, tools and training to ensure Service members, their spouses and/or caregivers are prepared for the next step in civilian life.”
The program offers an outcome-based curriculum that prepares participants with the resources necessary to meet Career Readiness Standards (CRS).
Purple Heart Medal recipient and U.S Army Veteran Congressman Brian Mast (R-Fla.) praised President Trump for his effort to improve veteran affairs.
