Florida officials celebrated Memorial Day with messages across social media, including Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), Lt. Gov. Jay Collins and former Florida House Speaker Paul Renner, all veterans, on Monday.
"Memorial Day hits differently when you’ve served beside men willing to give everything for this country," Collins wrote. "As a Green Beret, I learned that freedom is not guaranteed. It’s protected by Americans who put service above self and mission above comfort. Today, I’m remembering brothers who never made it home and the families who carry that sacrifice every single day. We honor them by staying strong, grateful, and proud to be Americans."
Lt. Gov. Collins served in the U.S. Army Special Forces for over two decades. Collins was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for his service in Afghanistan
"This Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who gave everything for our freedom," Renner wrote. Their sacrifice is the reason America remains the greatest nation on Earth. As a Navy veteran, I understand the meaning of service and the debt we owe to those who never came home. May we always remember their love of country, courage, and sacrifice. God bless our fallen heroes, their families, and the United States of America."
Renner served in the Navy, including during Operation Desert Storm in the Gulf War and later in Afghanistan in 2011.
"On Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who have laid down their lives and given the last full measure of devotion for the American people," Scott wrote. "Our freedom is not free; they paid for it with their lives. As a Navy veteran, I know the sacrifices our service members make each and every day. Their courage, dedication, and service should never be forgotten."
Scott served in the Navy as a radar man from 1971-1974.
The Florida Republican Party also honored the day.
"Today we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives defending our freedom. God bless our fallen heroes and their families," the Florida GOP wrote.
