The World War II Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was recently vandalized, with images published by the White House on X showing the site defaced with spray paint and covered in layers of bubbles around the fountain at its center.

The recent incident adds to the list of conspicuous local landmark vandalism, including the alleged vandalism of the Lincoln Memorial Reflection Pool and a large “86 47” carved into the grass near the Washington Monument.

According to several images, the vandals wrote “Clean hands Dirty $” along the inside of the fountain.

President Trump Condemns The Incident

President Donald Trump reacted to the incident, affirming that “THERE CAN BE NO GREATER INSULT TO THOSE AMERICAN HEROES WHO DIED IN WORLD WAR II.”

“First the Reflecting Pool, now this. We are on their trail!” President Trump added.

Sen. Scott Offended By Act

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) also took offense to the act, calling on the vandals to be prosecuted as soon as possible.

“Our World War II veterans are HEROES,” Sen. Scott wrote on social media. “My dad served in WWII and completed all four combat jumps with the 82nd [Airborne Division]. He and so many others put their lives on the line to keep our country safe, and they deserve our respect! This is the lowest of the low.”

The 82nd Infantry Division was re-designated as the U.S. Army’s first airborne division during World War II.

The division spearheaded four major combat parachute jumps in Sicily, Salerno, Normandy, and Holland.

DOI Announces Investigation

The Department of the Interior (DOI) announced that U.S. Park Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

“The vandalism that occurred is an utter disgrace and will not be tolerated,” a DOI spokesperson said in a statement. “The public should know we will find the person responsible for this disgusting act.”
