The state of Florida welcomed roughly 68,000 new residents from domestic migration in 2024, good for the second-best mark in the United States, according to a StorageCafe analysis posted last week of U.S. Census Bureau data.
However, while No. 2, Florida's net rate cut in half from 2023 levels, and dipped from its 2022 peak, the analysis found.
Specifically, Florida's 67,797 move-ins/move-outs largely came from New Yorkers (53,000) over taxes, climate, and retirement transitions. In addition, the Sunshine State also saw sizeable inflows from Texas (45,000), Georgia (36,000), and Pennsylvania (33,000).
Demographically, Florida ranked No. 1 in the country for Gen X net migration at 22,442, but lagged in millennial migration at -9,357, good for 49th, and Gen Z at -1,687, good for 36th.
The average age was 39.
The analysis also found 53% of arrivals purchased a home within their first year of relocating, despite state home prices going up 144% over the past decade. Moreover, movers had an average income of $68,000, offsetting some of the home cost.
Texas ranked No. 1 in the U.S. with +75,673 move-ins/move-outs in 2024, driven largely by California (77,000). The Lone Star State also saw large gains from Florida (52,000), New York (29,000), Colorado (24,000), and Illinois (23,000).
South Carolina (+53,734), Arizona (+51,387), Nevada (+43,466), North Carolina (+42,292), Georgia (+40,201), Ohio (+29,257), and Oklahoma (+28,392) rounded out the top 10 move-ins/move-outs for 2024.
Notably, Florida accounted for four of the top 10 states (North Carolina/Georgia/Tennessee/Ohio) for migration.
On the flip side, California ranked No. 1 in the country with -263,333 move-ins/move-outs in 2024, largely due to high costs, with Texas as the main beneficiary.
New York (-128,766), Illinois (-81,429), New Jersey (-60,916), Massachusetts (-30,474), Alaska (-22,169), Iowa (-21,458), Pennsylvania (-16,710), Colorado (-12,891), and Connecticut (-10,108) rounded out the bottom 1o move-ins/move-outs for 2024.
Notably, Florida accounted for three of the top states (Illinois/Massachusetts/Pennsylvania) for destination.
Florida's ranking for domestic net migration follows a strong showing from visitors, with a record $143.3 million coming to the Sunshine State in 2025, topping its previous record of $142.9 million set in 2024.
Of its record, 131.1 million (91.5%) came from domestic travel, including 30.31 million in the fourth quarter (October through December) of the year.
