The Major Chiefs City Association (MCAA) released its violent crime survey from law enforcement agencies across the United States for the first half of 2026, including Miami, Orlando, and Tampa, through a release this week.
The first half for 2026 and 2025 from the MCAA's survey is Jan. 1 to June 30.
Here are the results:
Homicide:
Miami PD: 8 (2025: 16)
Orlando PD: 10 (2025: 6)
Tampa PD: 11 (2025: 8)
Rape:
Miami PD: 58 (2025: 74)
Orlando PD: 106 (2025: 101)
Tampa PD: 56 (2025: 74)
Robbery:
Miami PD: 158 (2025: 202)
Orlando PD: 147 (2025: 135)
Tampa PD: 80 (2025: 101)
Aggravated Assault:
Miami PD: 657 (2025: 711)
Orlando PD: 579 (2025: 607)
Tampa PD: 568 (2025: 609)
For context, Miami's murder rate is 26X lower than the city of Chicago, which had 211 murders during the first half of 2026. Miami also had a lower murder rate than Los Angelas (108), Philadelphia (83), Houston (95), Dallas (70), and Memphis (67).
Gov. Ron DeSantis reacted to the results on social media.
"Florida has a 50 year low crime rate. When you enact law and order policies and support law enforcement, the bad guys pay the price," DeSantis wrote.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier also responded to the news.
"This is a result of the growing relationship between our Statewide Prosecutors and local law enforcement, historic DOJ cooperation, and President Trump closing the border," Uthmeier wrote. "Since I took office: 77% more prosecutions, prison sentences up 74%. Locking up the bad guys works!"
In addition, Outkick Founder and political commentator Clay Travis replied by calling Florida the "safest big state in America."
"Miami, Orlando and Tampa combined had just 29 murders in the first half of 2026," Travis wrote. "That’s incredible leadership and police work. Miami had just 8 murders so far in 2026, down 50% from last year."
The survey also recorded national U.S. crime rates from 66 of 67 responding agencies.
Homicide:
2026: 2,162 (2025: 2,611) -17.2%
Rape:
2026: 12,449 (2025: 13,277) -6.2%
Robbery:
2026: 31,629 (2025: 37,938) -16.6%
Aggravated Assault:
2026: 110,768 (2025: 117,416) -5.7%
Moreover, the survey found Canada's crime rates down across the board. Canada recorded -18.1% less homicides, -4.4% less sexual assaults, -17% less robberies, and -2.3% less aggravated assaults over the same mid-year period.
