Florida Democratic Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost appeared in a CNN interview where he slammed President Donald Trump’s federal takeover of D.C., claiming, “If Donald Trump actually gave a damn about keeping DC safe, then he wouldn't be gutting gun violence prevention efforts.”

Rep. Frost argued that the president’s claim of taking control of D.C. to make it safer stands in stark opposition to Trump’s axing of gun violence prevention programs.

“Why is Donald Trump completely gutting the bipartisan Safer Communities Act? The parts of it that support law enforcement, the parts of it that support the entire federal government, working together with local law enforcement on crime, illegal gun statistics, on intelligence, on guns, illegal gun trafficking, and cracking down on these guys. Why is Donald Trump undoing all of that from A to Z?” he said.

Frost continues, claiming that “In the last three years, gun violence has gone down the most we've seen in the history of this country.” however there is still “a lot of work to do as people still feel not safe,” as the Trump cuts to gun violence prevention programs could potentially jeopardize the progress made in reducing gun violence in the U.S.

The Trump administration previously imposed funding cuts to multiple gun prevention programs in the U.S., claiming “they no longer effectuate the program's goals or agency's priorities.”

Many outspoken critics claim the cuts only serve to reverse the gun violence statistics and exacerbate a crucial issue within the U.S.

Primarily, law enforcement offices in Louisville, Minneapolis, Tucson, and Omaha called on Attorney General Pam Bondi to reinstate the program’s funding, as they say it has resulted in “measurable and significant reductions in violence and homicides.”
