HIALEAH, Fla. - The City of Hialeah is set to consider a resolution to rename Palm Avenue as “President Donald J. Trump Avenue” to recognize President Donald Trump's accomplishments during his first United States presidential term from 2017-2021.
"The City of Hialeah would like the County to install signage indicating this codesignation on County street signs and traffic signal mast arms and [Whereas] Palm Avenue is a city-maintained street located in the City of Hialeah," the resolution reads.
Sponsored by County Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera, the resolution would honor Trump's accomplishments as the country's 45th President, which included signing the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
The resolution also added Trump's economic policies led to "record-low unemployment rates" of 3.5 percent in early 2020.
Located about 12 miles northwest of Miami in Miami-Dade County, Hialeah is one of the most Hispanic cities in the United States at well over 90%. The county itself is also over 70% Hispanic, making it one of the largest Hispanic populations in the nation.
Therefore, the resolution mentioned Trump's ability to sanction the socialist regimes of Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. It also noted his ability to acknowledge Juan Guaido as Venezuela’s legitimate president in 2019 over President Nicolas Maduro.
Maduro has since supplemented himself as president of the country after the 2024 Venezuelan presidential election. The victory over Independent candidate Edmundo Gonzalez is considered illegitimate by the United States.
In addition, the resolution also recognized Trump's establishment of the United States Space Force and brokering the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations for peace and stability in the Middle East.
After serving one term in office, Trump was defeated by Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden in 2020. He also lost Miami-Dade County but still managed to win Florida by over three points.
In a political comeback, Trump was reelected as the country's 47th president after defeating Vice President Kamala Harris on Nov. 5. In the process, Trump became the first president to win Miami-Dade County since George H.W. Bush in 1988.
Moreover, Trump defeated Harris in Florida by over 13 points.
The Hialeah Board of County Commissioners will decide on renaming the street at its meeting on Dec. 3.
