During an interview with NewsNation’s The Hill, Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) told Blake Burman that he doesn’t believe the U.S. will have to enact military action on Cuba because the Cuban people will rise against the Communist regime instead.
“I don’t think we’re going to have to do it. I think what’s going to happen is, we’ve seen the Cuban people rise up, and that’s why there’s political prisoners right now,” Sen. Scott speculated when asked about U.S. military intervention.
“The regime lives in opulence, and the people live in poverty. So they are going to rise up, because, I mean, the regime has nothing left. They have no money. They have no fuel. Now, the Castro family has money, but they’re not going to spend it to defend,” he added.
Protection Against a Potential Cuban Attack
Despite not believing that a U.S. military campaign will take place in Cuba, Sen. Scott affirmed the need to ensure that U.S. land is protected against the communist-led island.
“Now, one thing you heard is that they bought 300 drones. So I think that puts us in a position that we are going to have to think about how we make sure that Guantanamo Bay, in particular, and Key West, in particular, are better fortified,” Sen. Scott stated.
The Florida lawmaker’s concerns over Key West and Guantanamo Bay come from U.S. classified intelligence that alleges that Cuba acquired more than 300 military drones from Russia and Iran.
Previous reports from Axios indicate that the Cuban government began discussing plans to use the drones to attack the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, U.S. military vessels, and the island city of Key West, Fla.
Cuba will Go Away Soon
Sen. Scott assured that regardless, the Cuban government is going away, and that it poses no threat to the U.S.
The Republican Senator believes that the Cuban government will seek to deter any aggression, stating that if the communist island took any offensive action, “they’ll all be killed immediately.”
“But look, the regime’s going away. It’s going to happen. It’s going to happen soon. I want to thank the president for what he’s doing. We wouldn’t be here but for this president.”
