Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the signing of the Florida Farm Bill during a press conference in Sebring today.
SB 290 includes safeguards for agricultural operations, public safety improvements, natural resource and rural land protection, and food supply enhancements across the state.
"We do continue the momentum for preserving land in rural communities, particularly with respect to agricultural use of land, and I think that that's something that a lot of people want to see, and I know it's something I'm very supportive of," DeSantis said.
Specifically, SB 290 bans counties and municipalities from prohibiting the use of gasoline-operated or diesel-powered farm machinery, as opposed to electric equipment.
"If you want to use different stuff, fine, it's a free country, but I like the gas-powered better," DeSantis said. "I just think it's more reliable, and so that's what you believe, then you should be able to continue to do that."
The bill also includes protections for water quality and water infrastructure, including a ban on Class B biosolids by 2028 and regulating Class AA biosolids to reduce nutrient runoff. In addition, SB 290 restricts high-density development on rural lands designated for rural, conservation, or green space use.
Moreover, the bill makes the Farmers Feeding Florida program, an initiative to fight hunger and support local agriculture, including with more healthy food options, permanent.
It also makes it a crime to cheat or help someone cheat on a Commercial Driver License proficiency exam. Furthermore, the bill bans signal jammers, which can be used to block 911 calls and disrupt law enforcement operations.
"I think this package is really, really significant. I think it shows that we have a strong commitment to not just agriculture but our rural communities writ large. I've always said from the beginning that these are very vital assets that we have in the Free State of Florida," DeSantis said.
Sen. Keith Truenow (R-Tavares) sponsored the bill in the Senate. Reps. Danny Alvarez (R-Riverview) and Chad Johnson (R-Newberry) sponsored the bill (HB 433) in the House.
Agricultural Commissioner Wilton Simpson and Senate President Ben Albritton (R-Wauchula) joined Gov. DeSantis for the signing.
“The Free State of Florida just delivered another major win for the people who feed our state and our nation,” Simpson said in a release. “With the legislative leaders’ hard work this session and Governor DeSantis’ signature, the 2026 Florida Farm Bill is now law – protecting our farmers from government overreach, strengthening public safety, and preserving our natural resources and rural lands. I’m proud to stand alongside strong conservative leaders who understand that when you fight for freedom, family, and farmers, you’re fighting for Florida’s future.”
The law goes into effect on July 1.
