President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. will impose higher import duties on Canada’s automobiles and steel amid the nation’s escalating trade war with its northern neighbor.
“On January First, 2027, Tariffs on all Cars, Trucks, both large and small, Automotive Parts, and Steel, will be increased to 50%,” President Trump affirmed, arguing that “Canada has been ripping off the” U.S. for years.
“They feel entitled, and yet, WE DON’T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!” President Trump argued, labeling it as one of the worst nations to deal with.
"Canada will be treated like a State no longer!" President Trump asserted, echoing sentiments shared days prior.
Canada Announces Tit-For-Tat Response
President Trump’s announcement comes after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a "dollar-for-dollar" tariff response against the U.S.’s 50% tariff on Canadian goods.
The 50% tariff on roughly $28 billion of Canadian goods, including construction items, alcohol, hockey sticks, paper products and dairy, officially took effect on Aug. 21, 2026, at 12:01 a.m. EST.
The import duties come more than five weeks after President Donald Trump announced the economic measure and after a 3-day delay from the original deadline.
Carney Accuses U.S. Of Unfair & Unreliable Terms
“For over a year, Canada has worked intensively and in good faith with the United States to negotiate a new comprehensive trade deal. We have been pragmatic, patient, and persistent,” PM Carney affirmed on X.
According to Carney, during last-minute efforts to reach an agreement, the U.S. proposed “unfair, uneconomic” and questionable terms, leading to the talks ending.
“We cannot accept what the U.S. has offered, and we will not give what they have asked,” Carney stated.
Potential Billions Of Dollars Lost Due To Trade War
The trade war could cause billions of dollars in losses for both nations as relations with the U.S.’s second-top trading partner continue to turn sour.
According to U.S. trade data, the U.S. imported $1.5 billion in paper products such as plywood, parchment paper, cups, and plates in 2025.
The U.S. also brought in $1.5 billion worth of Canadian alcoholic beverages and $780 million worth of Canadian dairy products in 2025.
