Representative Vern Buchanan (R-FL) has introduced bipartisan, bicameral legislation promoting a "food as medicine" approach to support veterans with diet-related chronic illnesses.

Specifically, Rep. Buchanan's Produce Prescription for Veterans Act authorizes the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to prescribe special diets and to issue debit cards or vouchers that veterans can use to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at little to no additional cost.

According to Rep. Buchanan's press release, veterans are especially vulnerable to chronic illnesses, with nearly a quarter reporting food insecurity.

"I've long believed that prevention should be at the heart of our health care system, especially when it comes to those who've served our country," the Florida congressman said. "The Produce Prescription for Veterans Act puts the 'food is medicine' approach into action by helping veterans manage diet-related chronic conditions before they worsen. Making sure veterans have access to fresh, nutritious whole fruits and vegetables is a simple way to improve health outcomes and strengthen their quality of life."

Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), who is introducing the Senate companion bill, said, "As food costs climb and food deserts make grocery stores inaccessible, Americans—especially our veterans—are struggling to eat enough fruits and vegetables, contributing to high rates of chronic illness in the U.S."

"With the Produce Prescription for Veterans Act, we can put fresh foods within reach by implementing a 'produce prescription' program so that our veterans have the means to put fruits and vegetables on their plates," Sen. Durbin added.

Rep. Buchanan has previously called for reforms to nutrition education and training in American medical education. In September, he said, "As we work to combat the rising chronic disease epidemic, increased nutrition education is critically important for professionals working in the medical field. We need to ensure that medical practitioners provide patients with the knowledge and resources necessary to help them lead longer, happier, and healthier lives."
