Florida gubernatorial candidate Paul Renner (R) reiterated his call for the Florida legislature to cut property taxes, including with some direct demands, as residents seek an answer to one of the state's most pressing matters.
“Floridians are struggling with prices that have shot up far faster than their incomes. Families are cutting back on groceries, seniors are stuck in homes and cannot afford to down-size, and insurance costs are too high," Renner said in a statement. "This is 100% government’s fault."
Florida lawmakers, led by House Speaker Daniel "Danny" Perez (R-Miami), proposed a series of initiatives to cut property taxes intended for the 2026 ballot last October. However, little progress has been made, including in the Senate chamber.
Gov. Ron DeSantis also pledged a plan last September.
Renner, the former House Speaker, isn't too happy with the lack of progress, demanding that the Legislature "do their job" to find a result.
“The House has proposed conflicting plans that give only marginal relief. The Senate has not taken up anything. Local governments are lobbying heavily to stop property tax reform. The legislature needs to stop dragging their feet and do their job — deliver real affordability reforms with property tax cuts now!" Renner stated.
He even went a step further, saying that lawmakers who fail to deliver should be thrown out of office.
"Every legislator and local elected official that lobbied against property tax cuts should be recalled or voted out of office. This is a dereliction of duty of the worst kind," Renner accused.
Renner recently laid out his plan to rollback property taxes in an exclusive interview with The Floridian.
“Florida’s economy cannot survive if only the wealthy can afford to live here," he commented. "Teachers, first responders, service workers, retirees, and young families are being forced out by inaction. The Legislature must choose: protect Floridians or protect a broken system that rewards runaway taxation.”
