The Florida House of Representatives passed a pair of bills honoring conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk in the lower chamber this week. Kirk was assassinated while speaking at a campus event sponsored by Turning Point at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10, 2025.
Charlie Kirk Day of Remembrance (HB 125)
The bill would establish Oct. 14 as "Charlie Kirk Day of Remembrance" in the state. Oct. 14 is Charlie Kirk's birthday.
Reps. Yvette Benarroch (R-Marco Island) and Meg Weinberger (R-Palm Beach Gardens) sponsored the legislation. The vote was 82-31.
The bill is pending Senate approval. Sens. Jonathan Martin (R-Fort Myers) and Don Gaetz (R-Pensacola) sponsored the Senate version (SB 194).
If fully passed and signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, the legislation would take effect on July 1.
Transportation Facility Designations (HB 33)
The bill would designate a portion of Southwest 107th Avenue (State Road 90) between 8th Street and 24th Street in Miami-Dade County as “Charlie Kirk Memorial Avenue.” The namesake would also be near Florida International University (FIU).
Reps. Juan Porras (R-Miami) and Meg Weinberger (R-Palm Beach Gardens) sponsored the legislation. The vote was 82-30.
Both Rep. Porras and Kirk founded a Turning Point (TPUSA) chapter at FIU in 2015. TPUSA, one of the largest youth conservative organizations in the country, has chapters across the United States.
The avenue would, in part, honor Kirk's free market principles, which he promoted throughout his life.
"Florida International University is home to many students who know firsthand the dangers of communism through their families and community," Porras told The Floridian back in September.
"That culture of valuing freedom and rejecting oppressive ideologies is at the heart of what he promoted," Porras commented. "Placing this designation near FIU ties Charlie Kirk's work in civic engagement to a campus that already embodies these principles and where his work in FL began about 10 years ago."
Along with Kirk's designation, HB 33 would also designate a section of Commercial Boulevard (State Road 870) in Broward County as "President Donald J. Trump Boulevard."
HB 33 is pending Senate approval. Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez (R-Doral) sponsored the Senate version (SB 174), although it does not include language for Trump's namesake.
If fully passed and signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, the legislation would take effect on July 1.
