The Florida Senate Democratic Caucus voted this week to designate Sen. Shevrin "Shev" Jones (D-Miami Gardens) as its next Senate Democratic Leader for the 2028-2030 legislative term.
“I could not be more thrilled for my friend and a fierce fighter for all Floridians, Sen. Shevrin Jones, as he assumes this mantle of leadership in the Senate,” Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried said in a statement.
“From his childhood in South Florida and working on behalf of the students at Florida A&M as a member of student government, to his time as a community leader and member of the legislature, Senator Jones has always led with a heart devoted to service and a mind laser-focused on the needs of everyday people," Fried continued.
Jones, 42, has served District 34 in the Senate since 2022, and in the Senate since 2020.
SD 34 includes part of Miami-Dade County, including Miami Gardens. Jones also served District 101 in the Florida House of Representatives from 2012 to 2020.
Jones was born in Miami Gardens. Before politics, he received a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry/molecular biology from Florida A&M University in 2006 and a master's degree in educational leadership from Florida Atlantic University in 2017.
He also previously taught AP Chemistry in Broward County Public Schools and was the executive director of South Florida Reading Corps.
"As a leader in the chamber, his trademark conviction and compassion will support the creation of policies that ensure every Floridian is seen and can thrive," Fried said. "He will fight so that our state lives up to its potential as a place where families can afford housing, healthcare is accessible, public education is stronger, and economic opportunity is available for all who seek it."
"I applaud the Senate Democratic Caucus on this spectacular selection. It will truly be a game-changer for the people of the State of Florida," she concluded.
