Representative Cory Mills (R-FL) has introduced a resolution condemning the Iranian government for its increased repression of its people, further condemning the regime for its destabilizing influence in the Middle East.

The countrywide protests began in December 2025 as a result of the Iranian Rial (its currency) collapsing from economic pressure, pressing demonstrators to call for the overthrow of the regime. The Islamist government has ordered brutal crackdowns on protesters, which have led to a growing death toll of activists that is being estimated to be in the thousands.

In mid-January, President Donald Trump signaled support for the protests, claiming, "Help is on the way." However, when asked what that meant, he replied, "You're gonna have to figure that one out, I'm sorry," which earned harsh criticism.

Nevertheless, Rep. Mills has introduced the resolution for Iran's acts of mass murder and mass detention, along with condemnations of its continued material and financial support for Hamas, Hezbollah, and other Shia-aligned jihadists throughout the Middle East that threaten its stability and U.S. interests alike.

"America must remain steadfast in defending human rights and standing with those fighting for freedom," Rep. Mills said in his press release, adding, "This resolution sends a clear message: the Iranian people are not alone, and their bravery in the face of tyranny deserves global support."

In addition, the Florida congressman emphasized that "Peaceful protest is a universal right, and the Iranian people deserve freedom, safety, and justice. The Iranian regime's use of lethal force against civilians, arbitrary detentions, and suppression of fundamental freedoms is unacceptable. The United States must stand with the Iranian people in their pursuit of dignity, liberty, and the rule of law."

The resolution comes days after the USS Abraham Lincoln shot down an Iranian drone that approached the ship with seemingly hostile intent, and an American Stena Imperative oil tanker was threatened by Iranian boats in the Strait of Hormuz.
