During a House Judiciary Committee hearing with FBI Director Kash Patel, Representative Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) demanded an investigation into alleged forgery regarding a birthday card attributed to President Donald Trump. The president is alleged to have given the card to Jeffrey Epstein for his 50th birthday.
The card was allegedly gifted to Epstein by Trump in 2003, which features a drawing of a female body and a signature. The White House has denied that the handwriting is Trump's.
In response, Rep. Moskowitz questioned, "if it is a forgery, why would we not investigate it?"
"When the Epstein estate released that document of the woman's body with the writing of the President's signature, the President said first that the document did not exist," Rep. Moskowitz said in the hearing. "Then he said, when it came out, that the document was false, and then he said the signature is not his. If that is true, then shouldn't the FBI open up an investigation? It is a forgery of the President of the United States. Why would we not investigate it?"
Rep. Moskowitz emphasized the need for there to be transparency regarding the Epstein investigation, noting that "there is a ton of pressure."
Democrats and Republicans alike have demanded transparency from the Trump Administration about the "Epstein files." The president ran his presidential campaigns on shedding light on the files, but many have criticized his recent remarks on the topic.
After signing a bill last year allowing people to receive access to the Epstein Files, Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) commented that "nobody should be protected from facing justice due to their wealth or status, and those who harm children should be exposed and punished to the fullest extent of the law."
Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) commented on the investigation last month, expressing that "it's unlikely that Donald Trump did anything illegal, but he certainly doesn't want, whatever his involvement was, to be exposed, and that's outrageous."
