Representative Kat Cammack (R-FL) is refusing her congressional salary until Democrats agree to an appropriations bill, as a government shutdown is expected to take effect on October 1st.
Rep. Cammack posted her announcement on X, writing that "the Democrats want to shut down the government because we won't give them free healthcare for illegals." "On top of that, they won't even pass a bill that protects our military or border patrol agents' pay in the event of a shutdown!" Rep. Cammack continued, calling on Democrats "to give up their pay as well; I'll start."
She also shared a letter to Chief Administrative Officer Catherine Szpindor, which reads, "It is my understanding that, despite a lapse in appropriations and a government shutdown, Members of Congress will continue to receive their salaries as a matter of Constitutionality."
"With that in mind, I respectfully request that you withhold my net pay until an appropriations agreement is reached and has taken effect," the Florida Congresswoman expressed. "If our military is not being paid, neither should Members of Congress."
In early September, Cammack expressed a "cautious optimism" about avoiding a government shutdown, which she had hoped could be avoided without the need for a continuing resolution (CR).
"It is really Republicans' and Democrats' fault that we have not completed our regular order of appropriations bills," Cammack previously told Fox Business. "Families have to budget. My family has to budget. Why shouldn't Congress, and in the face of $37, pushing $38 trillion in national debt with deficits?"
The Florida Congresswoman further condemned Democrats for refusing to negotiate.
"I wish that my colleagues on the left would root for our country to succeed more than they would cheer for the man in the White House to fail," she commented.
